What we have achieved and what
we need to do:

Need 1.4 Million dollars for Phase 2 work to start using the cemetery in Nov 2023 Phase 2 work includes:
- Masjid: Mens and womens prayer halls, body washing ( Ghusul ) facility for the deceased, viewing room, washrooms and wudu areas for brothers and sisters
- Security perimeter fencing
- Paving roads

Alhamdulillaah we have closed on the property. We are one step closer to establishing the first and only Muslim cemetery run on a Masjid model. We are making this cemetery an endowment ( WAQF) for the ummah. We are NOT selling grave sites. It’s free for all Muslims forever In Sha Allah!
A PROBLEM AND ITS SOLUTION
- More than 750 Muslims pass away in the Greater Chicagoland area each year.
- Average cost of a funeral is between 4,500- 6,000 dollars. (Funeral director fee , funeral home fee, grave site expense).
- Giving a Shariah compliant burial to a deceased Muslim is a communal obligation.
- Unfortunately, many Muslim families find it very difficult to afford a burial.
- Average grave site expense in a cemetery is between 2,800-3,600 dollars ( includes the plot, and services to dig and close the grave).
- Can all Muslims afford this? What is the solution?
- Muslim cemeteries have been an integral aspect of the Muslim identity for centuries.
- In traditional Muslim communities, cemeteries were maintained by the State or by Awqaaf (Endowments).
- In countries where the State or the Awqaaf(Endowments)cemeteries don’t exist, the responsibility falls on all of us.
- We are presenting a vision for a Muslim cemetery that serves all Muslims irrespective of their ability to pay.
- Currently Muslims don’t own a cemetery we can call our own!
- We have been using plots in commercial/Christian cemeteries to bury our loved ones.
- American Muslim Cemetery is the first of its kind in Illinois.
- Managed on a “Masjid Model” it will serve all Muslims irrespective of their ability to pay.
- The Ummah will buy the cemetery with donations and all Muslims will use the cemetery -Just like we run all our Masaajid!
- No one will have to be concerned about being able to afford a sunnah burial-InshaAllah.
Zoning Approved for Muslim Green Burials

- Current average cost is 3,000 dollars per grave site (excluding the cost for opening and closing the grave!)
- Proposed 28,000 graves x $3,000 = $72,000,000! ( Factoring for inflation it will cost the community 80 million dollars!)
- Community will pay 80 million dollars in next 50 years at current rate.
- OUR PROPOSED PLAN COST IS LESS THAN 1.5 MILLION DOLLARS!

We do not sell grave or reserve grave sites. All Muslims will be able to use the cemetery free of charge, as long as the grave sites last. InshaAllah, we will have accommodation for approximately 25,000 to 30,000 graves. InshaAllah, we hope the cemetery will serve the community for 50 years or more.
Alhamdulillah, we have been approved for a green burial cemetery zoning. We have closed on the property. We are in the process of developing the land. Once we develop the land, the community can start using the cemetery. Our expected date of use is early May 2022, InshaAllah.
We want to ensure Sunnah burials are accessible to all Muslims irrespective of their ability to pay. Thus we have decided not to sell graves to any individual or entity. This cemetery will be used free of charge for all Muslims. Thus we do not want to put a price tag on the grave site. We encourage the community to donate generously so we can continue to provide this free service to the Ummah, to be used on an as needed basis by all Muslims until the cemetery can accommodate.
